Custom Randonneur Rack & Detachable Lowriders on a Carbon Fiber Bike!

Here’s a really interesting and challenging rack. This bike is a custom Calfee carbon 650b rando bike. I’ve never liked carbon bikes, but this one almost changed my mind. The frame is beautiful, with carbon bilaminate lugs. It came to me as a flat black sanded raw carbon frame and I could see all the hand lay-up details. It was cool.

The customer wanted racks, but most carbon forks are for race bikes and have no eyelets. After lots of back and forth and searching he found this Niner fork that had a few threaded mounts, and I do only mean a few. one of the back of the crown and 3 down each blade. It was enough!

I had to be creative with the rack. it goes under the crown and up the back of the crown. There’s an extra mount added under the rack for the fender to mount too. Modern problems require modern solutions!

I was a little upset by the paint job. I really did like the subtle details of the carbon. I wish this bike would have just had a clear coat to keep it subtle and let the custom carbon work speak for itself. But the customer had really wanted to have a bike painted in color stripes for a while and it is his bike, and he loves it, so it’s pretty cool. This one color photo is the only one I ever saw of the bike.
